Cool decor and bagels may not seem to go hand-in-hand but Bruegger’s has pulled it off. Plans to renovate an old firehouse in south Minneapolis probably meet with its fair share of skeptics at the corporate office but kudos to Bruegger’s for breaking from the pack of boring and land wasting strip malls. From fireman coats hanging on the wall to the iconic fireman poles (there are two of them), inspiration can’t help but heat up when conjuring up memories of what these walls could say.

These are the experiences that you need to keep ideas flowing and motivation high. While you’re not likely to find any contacts or customers at your local bagel shop, you are putting yourself out in the real world where real people interact. For example, if you’ll squint hard enough at the picture to the left you’ll see a businessman in a white shirt and tie sitting with his laptop. Needless to say, I’m not in a white shirt and tie. However, I am just as engaged in my work as he is his.

Fifty years ago men slid down these fire poles next to me and dash off to the scene of an accident or fire. They likely had no idea of what to expect when they arrived but I’m rather certain that their pulses were racing and the adrenalin was flowing in anticipation.

What about you today? Do your palms sweat a little at the thought of talking to someone about your products? Are you racing from appointment to appointment, or phone call to phone call, or email to email with the expectation that someone really needs your help, your education, your experience?
